MRI Afternoon Snooze

I had the MRI of my knee done this afternoon.  Now I’ve never been a huge fan of having these things done because I’ve always been in one of two kinds.

So claustrophobic!
So claustrophobic!

Or…

Always felt like the thing was going to crush me.
Always felt like the thing was going to crush me.

So imagine my surprise (after removing all metal from my person to walk into a room and see this.

Weird right?
Weird right?

What you don’t see is the little stand on the right where I rested my right leg, while the left went into the hole there for the scan.  Also added bonus the seat was missing the extra leg rest area and hardly had enough room for my now slightly larger bum.  I had thought this test would take maybe half an hour.  I was wrong…more like a good 40 to 45 minutes.  But never you fear I spent the time passed out cold.

No I did not take the complimentary ear plugs.  I figured I would be perfectly fine and I was until the nice lady woke me up to inform me I had two painfully long scans to go.  Somehow I still managed to nod back off, which was awesome.  I really wish there was an MRI sound feature on my sleep setting of my alarm clock…seems I find them super soothing!

SNOW!

So apparently we are about to get a lot of the white stuff here in Upstate New York.  Which has brought this kind of behavior out in some people.

Come on people it isn’t that bad.  Plus as my husband pointed out “if you didn’t buy enough food when last you went to market…well, you need to look at how you shop.”  He has a point.  However, IF we run out of milk he’s the one who will be cold walking to Stewarts and not me kids!

My plan for this snowy weekend is to do as little as possible.  I’ve been busting my rear all week, plus my knee is still very angry with me.  So there will be naps.  There will be copious amounts of tea had.  I will also be catching up on TV.  Be warned there may be spoilers for your beyond this point for Bones and How I Met Your Mother.

There may even be some How I Met Your Mother.  I’m only up to this episode so far.

For the love of Ted just get to who the mother is ALREADY!!  Please don’t spoil it for me.  I’m really enjoying it so far and also a little sad to be so far behind.  As it is I’m all caught up on Bones to a point too.  I just finished last season where Booth, because of Pelant tells Brennan he can’t marry her!  TV you are killing me!!

Are you getting any snow where you are?  What are your plans?  First thing for me is the nap with this guy.

Purrr...
Purrr…

And now for something completely Sherlock (BBC)

In case you’ve been living under a rock there was a new trailer was launched last week for Series 3.  Have a look I’ll be right here, yelling “I CARE HOW HE DID IT JOHN!!”  A-hem…as you were.

Awesome right?  Ah but that’s not all folks.  There’s more you ask?  Oh yes, yes there is!

Then there were the photos from Series 3 released, like this one…

Come here and let me comfort you.
Come here and let me comfort you.

You can find more photos here.  Be warned there are some potential spoilers in the photos.

Oh and while not TOTALLY Sherlock related – who can forget Benedict Cumberbatch on Jimmy Kimmel reading R. Kelly lyrics?  Yep that happened.

If you need me…I’ll be in my bunk.  As a final reminder before I head off to my bunk, Series 3 airs on January 19, 2014 on PBS – check your local listings.

Good News, Bad News

Good news…I called the ortho on Monday morning and had an appointment by that very afternoon!  Yes!  More “good” news.  The ortho thinks I have tendonitis in my hip.  How the heck I got that is anyone’s guess because I am not a runner as the doctor thought.  Well, unless I’m being chased that is!  Plus I got myself a nice cortisone injection which hurt like a mother going in!  But I suspect the needle looked something like this:

Maybe not, but it felt like it!!
Maybe not, but it felt like it!!

I think it might finally be starting to take effect.  At least I hope so, because if it fails, well I”m SOL.  Also there is a LOVELY quarter sized bruise at the injection site.  Cute.

Now for the bad news.  To add to the fun I now need an MRI of my knee.  Doc thinks I may have torn one or both of my menisci.  Awesome!  Because I have time for surgery if I need it.  To which he responded “You won’t have much say in the matter.”  Which I kind of expected.  So that was my Monday, how was yours?

Who doesn’t like good news?

I promised an update.  But first…I saw this little gem on my Twitter feed when I stopped by this here page and had to share.

This was from the Ask Smaug bit over on Twitter earlier this afternoon. Swoon!
This was from the Ask Smaug bit over on Twitter earlier this afternoon. Swoon!

Yes, yes that is Benedict Cumberbatch…oh sorry was side tracked for a moment.  Where was I?  Oh right my latest doctors appointment.  So I switched to a new ob/gyn and had my first visit yesterday.  Nope not pregnant, but he seems to think we shouldn’t have too many issues when we want to try again.  Turns out having the Trisomy 16 turn up was a blessing.  First off there was nothing I could have done to carry a baby to term with an extra 16th chromosome.  A baby with that defect can’t survive.  My new doctor also thinks that it is HIGHLY unlikely that I will have another pregnancy where this will happen.

New plan is to obviously get pregnant.  But before I do be sure to take my prenatal vitamins, extra folic acid AND start taking a “baby” 81mg aspirin tablet a day.  Once we get pregnant call the doctor asap so we can plan the next steps which may involve some extra progesterone for a bit.  But hey it’s better than what the local fertility folks told me…IVF is your only way to go.  No thanks, I can get pregnant people.  So fingers crossed.

Told you it was good news.

Damn my leg!

Get the reference?  No, well I’m not telling.  Alright fine…

And there we are.
And there we are.

Anyway…I have had the “pleasure” of waking up in severe pain in my left leg for the last month.  Before you ask, yes I have drugs for it.  Apparently after being on it for almost two weeks it has yet to kick in.  Nice right?  Plus as an added bonus the pain lasts for at least three hours after I drag myself out of bed.

This has begun to be a real problem as you can imagine.  Looks like I’ll be giving the doctor yet another call.  Happy happy joy joy!

Sigh.

Black Friday Fun

Happy post turkey coma day!  I tried to stop in at Walmart last night to pick up some much needed over the counter meds and something to kill my nasty canker sores.  Well, let me tell you THAT was a huge mistake!  The place was a zoo and the store was blocked off in odd ways in order to herd people in certain directions.  Odd thing was there were Walmart folks who told me I wasn’t allowed in that area!  What?  So long story short, that trip was a bust.

Today two of my friends and I went out around 11am (friends T and K plus their kids).  Thankfully we went out to stores after the big rushes.  I wasn’t fighting people for items.  I think that’s the dumbest thing on the planet.  We hit up Target and Michaels and after all was said and done I finished shopping for the Hubbins and The Niece!  Plus I may have picked up one or two things for my friends that they failed to notice.  Muahahaha!

So now I’m just sitting back and enjoying a gluten free cider while I check on some other online shopping deals.  I’m telling you I’ve found that online is the way to go.  In fact when we have kids that’s my plan…online all the way IF I can help it.  I hate crowds and I refuse to fight someone over the latest and greatest toy or whatever.  But that’s me.

NO thanks!
NO thanks!

How was your Black Friday?  Did you shop?  Did you get any awesome deals?

Make ALL the pies! {Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie}

Well, it happens to be the night before Thanksgiving.  Were this ten years ago I might be out with friends having a drink or two.  But I’m not.  No I’m home baking two pies for tomorrow and drinking a glass of wine while I wait for them to cool.  I did both with a gluten free crust mix my husband came up with…

Gluten free flour mix:

Amount Ingredient
6 cups (32 ounces) Brown rice flour
2 cups (10 3/4 ounces) Potato starch
1 cup (4 ounces) Tapioca starch

Whisk all ingredients together.  Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Amount (single crust) Amount (double crust) Ingredient
6 Tbsp 12 Tbsp (1.5 sticks) Unsalted butter
5.75 oz 11.5 oz Gluten free flour mix
1 Tbsp 2 Tbsp sugar
0.5 tsp 1 tsp Xantham gum
0.5 tsp 1 tsp Salt
1 2 Large eggs
2 tsp 4 tsp Lemon juice or Vinegar
Some Some more Ice water

Cut the butter into 1/2″ cubes and put in the freezer for 15 minutes to an hour.  An hour is better.

Combine the flour blend, sugar, xanthan gum, and salt in the food processor (metal blade).  Pulse to mix.  Chill in freezer if desired.

Add butter, egg, and vinegar or lemon juice and pulse 6-8 times until mixture resembles coarse meal & the butter chunks are pea-sized.  Add ice water 1 Tbsp at a time, pulsing until mizture just begins to clump.  If you pinch it and it holds together, it’s ready.  Too much water makes for a tough crust!

On a clean surface, smoosh the dough together.  (For a super-flaky crust, lightly flour the outside of the dough and fold onto itself 2-3 times).  Don’t overwork the dough!  Divide in two, form pucks, wrap in plastic, and put in the fridge for 1 hour – overnight.

——–

Prepare the filling – In this case check out the can of Libby’s for the instructions.  If you have the pre-spiced mix there isn’t much to do.  If you just bought the canned Libby’s pumpkin…you have a little work ahead.

——–

Lightly grease a 9″ pie pan.

Allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes before rolling.  After waiting for first puck, remove second for great justice, and timing.

Roll with rolling pin, using flour to make sure it doesn’t stick to your rolling surface, until it’s about 12″ across & about 1/8″ thick.

Carefully transfer to prepared pie pan (do the previous step on a silicone sheet for easy transference to pie pan).  Trim to within 0.5″ of dish.

Fill with filling.

Bake according to the directions on the can, cool, and eat!

So we ended up making two pumpkin pies.  I had a can of Libby’s Pumpkin Pie Mix and a plain can of Libby’s Pumpkin (which I needed to make my own spice and such for.  It is amazing how different they look!  But they each smell like they should.  Do they taste the way they should?  Well, that surprise will come tomorrow! Dun, dunn, dunnn!

Now that said pies are cooling.  I’m sitting back with my wine and the internets.  Happy Thanksgiving!

It is done!

2013 in the bag!
2013 in the bag!

I have finished NaNoWriMo!  However, it did involve a little NaNoCheat because I finished the novel at 35K and change and then was stumped as to what to do.  So I went to my local NaNo group and Country-wide group to ask if they thought it would be cheating to count words towards my new project?  The verdict NO.  So I did and here we are.

Now back to the second project!  November isn’t over yet kids.

About last night

We had a little birthday pub crawl in Toga last night for the Little Sister’s 30th birthday.  (She will tell you she’s 25.)  I can tell you this, I was not drinking a thing.   Which was a very good thing.  I can also tell you all…she can NEVER give me shit again for ANYTHING!  EVER!  Oh and this:

Pretty much.
Pretty much.

But the story may turn up in my memoir.  Because it just has to be added.
