Mr. Gaiman meets Islington {And how to quell a riot}

First, hello and welcome new followers! I’m glad to have you here.

Now on to what happened last night when Neil Gaiman came to Saratoga Springs, NY to talk about and sign his newest book The Ocean at the End of the Lane (buy local). Several of us headed up to Saratoga for the event and I won’t lie we were bouncing out of our skin. Well, fine it was really just two of the five of us (fine one was me).

Upon entering the room where we would hear Mr. Gaiman speak we were handed a copy of the book with a little bookmark with a letter on it. This letter would dictate how screwed you were in the signing line. We had “E”, K & D had “C”, and MommaT, who purchased her ticket after us landed “A”! I did try to snag her bookmark once or twice. The show began a bit late as these things do, but we managed to entertain ourselves while we waited.

We were getting more excited now! Thanks K & D for the photo(s)

I should mention I brought my ukelele, Islington, I figured it would be COOL if he could sign it. Everyone figured I didn’t have a chance. But you can’t blame a gal for trying, right? Finally the magic moment arrived! The man was there not 15 feet from where we were sitting. He was speaking to an intimate group of 1,500!! I was certain he would need a stand in to sign all the books.

It was lovely, he chatted of course about his book. Which I can’t wait to read, I’ve heard amazing things so far. He also made mention of his childhood where he recalled those times when he was forced to clear his plate because there were “starving children in China”. His solution, mail them his food. Sound familiar? It should for my generation there were “starving children in Ethiopia”. It would seem some things never change.

There was also the magical moment where he told us a vulgar joke where the key word rhymed with duck. It was funny to hear him tell it as though he was the boy who had told him the joke oh so many years ago! Mr. Gaiman really is a treasure to hear speak. He also read from his new book and a children’s book due in the Fall.

We were even treated to a Q & A session (of three questions). I only recall two of them.

Q: “Will you still write when you are very, very, very old?”

A: “I am very, very, very old! But really, yes I hope so.”

Q: “How many secrets can you keep in your hair?”

A: “All of them!”

Once the session was over we began the wait for our letter to be called. When our friends in “C” were called, well we figured we were never getting out of there. Until the magic moment when friends of D and K left them with their “C” card!! We – well I was off and running into the line! Turns out I should not have been in a huge hurry as it took two hours to get to the holy grail of Neil Gaiman.

Side note I had never read any of his stuff until my Hubbins introduced me to it. But I had been a HUGE Amanda Palmer fan for years. So when they married I told Hubbins your author married my rock star. He tried to tell me it was the other way around. Either way I’m glad he gave me American Gods to read. I’ve loved everything I’ve read of his since then.

Anyway where was I. Right…in line! Finally, there we were and there he was. But we all had our shit together. This came in handy. Our books were set out on the table to make it easier to sign them. Then an idea hit me…open the ukelele case, maybe he WOULD sign it. I asked the woman taking the books what she thought and she suggested I go for it. Then it happened…my book was signed and Islington was next. And Neil Gaiman announced he needed a break to the loo.

But he told us to wait where we were (NO problem). We were also instructed that it was our job to quell the riot that might occur when he took this break. None of us were worried. In fact we took the opportunity to lose our shit. His crappy Lipton tea was photographed. So was his empty chair. (We may have problems…)

This is how we quell riots!
This is how we quell riots!

Lucky we saw him returning and composed our shit quickly. As I still needed to see if he’d sign my ukelele. He asked us if there were riots. But K assured him that she did a little dance to prevent this from happening. Mr. Gaiman responded with a fist pump and “Yes!” I took this little break to him an unopened bag of Weeping Angel tea (created for Doctor Who fans) due to the crap tea they gave him. He took it and smiled.

I then told him the story…this was Islington my favorite character in his book (Neverwhere) and his lovely wife Amanda had been who inspired me to give the ukelele a go. I pointed out where he could sign it and instead he PICKED IT UP in order to sign it. Mr. Gaiman asked if I wanted him to make it out to Islington or to me? My response? I’ll leave it up to you, as I may have to pass out! (I could not believe this was happening) He chuckled as he signed it and chuckled a little more when I told him I thought he’d tell me to piss off and go to one of Amanda’s shows to have her sign it.

He took a good bit of time to do this.
He took a good bit of time to do this.

Hubbins got the whole thing on video and once he gives it to me I will post it for all to hear/see. Actually a few people caught it on video. After he was finished he showed it to me and asked if what he’d done was alright. I was damn near speechless…but I managed to tell him it was perfect. So perfect that after I thanked him I damn near forgot my signed book! Smooth. We all thanked him and told him he had MADE OUR NIGHT.

Taking our leave we tried not to skip and freak out more. As I was walking out with Islington not fully in his case people who had poked fun at me earlier were now in awe. I was grinning like a loon and could have cared less.

There it is!
There it is!

I’m still trying to come down from cloud 9. But then a few other things happened….this last night…

I tweeted a picture to Amanda Palmer...she responded!
I tweeted a picture to Amanda Palmer…she responded!

Then today I realized I may not have told him what was in the tea….what if he was allergic? What if I accidentally killed him?

This too happened today...
This too happened today…

My friends think I’ve arrived. I’d like to think I’m on the right road. Last night was the most amazing night I have ever had in a long time. I am now inspired to write my little heart out and play Islington until my fingers bleed. As you can tell from my crazy fangirling. But I don’t care this memory will last a lifetime and I will enjoy every moment of joy it brings me!

Many thanks to Neil Gaiman for coming to our little neck of the woods in Saratoga, NY and for signing our books (and Islington). Most of all my thanks to him for sharing himself with us.

*Special thanks to K and D for the photos!! You guys rock!”

No bun(s) in the oven…yet

I’ve been silent I know. But busy. I also have BIG news. No, don’t get all cray cray people. There is no bun in this here oven. We’re going to take a little break from that business for now. There are a few good reasons why.

Yours truly landed herself a new job yesterday! {insert flailing muppet arm here} Yup I start very soon. I’m excited AND it happens to be the start of my dream job working for a law firm focused on advocacy. That is all I will say on the topic for now. Sorry kids, but even some things should not be splashed all over the internets! As time goes on I may say more, but we’ll see.

In other Grey Hat news the hubbins and I are off to the Emerald Isle! That’s right kids we are headed to Ireland! I am beyond over the moon about this. We’re doing a driving tour and staying in some amazing castles and bed and breakfasts. And NO I won’t tell you when….no robbing my house people!

The hubbins sent me flowers at work!
The hubbins sent me flowers at work!

That’s right my hubbins is even more awesome! My dear friend Pesha of Flowers By Pesha was waiting for me when I arrived at work this morning with these lovely flowers. I am one LUCKY lady! Seriously, I’m sort of having the best week ever. But wait there’s more!

Wow, I sound like an infomercial. But today I picked up a travel book of Ireland (duh) and….AND a ukelele!!! I know what your thinking. Really? Or perhaps you might be thinking Oh dear lord why? Well, I like it. Plus I’ve wanted one for a while and it was also my paid off one loan gift/new job gift to myself! Also the hubbins said I could. He even let me tinker on it in the car. Now I have NO idea how to play it, but that’s what youtube is for.

Pay no attention to my WHITE legs. They may blind you.
Pay no attention to my WHITE leg. It may blind you.

Special thanks to Amanda Palmer (who I’m sure does not read this blog) for getting the idea into my head in the first place. She’s fantastic!

Which in an odd way brings me back to the next amazing thing on my list of cool things this week. The hubbins, some friends, and I are going to see NEIL GAIMAN tomorrow night! I am beyond excited. He’s going to talk about his new book The Ocean at the End of the Lane and some other things. Mr. Gaiman will also be signing a copy of his new book and if time permits another of his books we might want to bring!

I also have bridesmaid duties to attend to Friday evening for a bit. The niece is coming to stay and oh right I’m getting my 4th tattoo! I’m not going to tell you what it is. You’ll see it soon enough!

I’ve got a pretty jam packed week ahead and I am loving it!

In other news you still have time to enter my GIVEAWAY! To enter just comment on the blog post with what you want to be entered to win.

Whew, that was a lot. I’m going to go tinker on my new ukelele which I have named Islington. I don’t know why, but there you have it. My soprano ukelele is named Islington. I wonder if I could get Neil Gaiman to sign it?

Baked Potato Soup {Gluten Free Recipe}

A tea friend of mine gave me her recipe for baked potato soup about two years ago now. So here it is for all of you to try out and also adapt to make it your own:

5 lbs potatoes (russet or red bliss), peeled and diced in 1 to 2-inch chunks
1 teeny onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon red pepper
6 cups chicken broth
2 cups Lapsang Souchong tea (I’ve found any quality Lapsang will do) or if you aren’t feeling adventurous use 2 cups of water
Crumbled bacon and green onion or chives as garnish

Optional (I always add them)

1 cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese

1 cup Monterey Jack Cheese

Use a 6 quart or larger slow cooker. Peel and dice the potatoes, and put them into the pot. Add onion and garlic. Sprinkle in the seasonings, and pour in the broth and tea. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or on high for 4. The potatoes should be fork-tender.

From here you have two options:

You can use a potato masher to mash the potatoes in the soup, or a hand-held blender. (WARNING Blending too long may lead to a mashed potato thickness) Here’s where the OPTIONAL bit comes in…this is where I like to add in the cheese to make it a little creamier. But you don’t have to at all, just a personal preference.

You can also leave the potatoes in chunks. I still add the cheese, but when I make it this way I add it with the garnishing items.

Garnish with crumbled bacon, green onion or chives. This one is a crowd pleaser!

Better Living Via Chemistry

My procedure/surgery went off without a hitch on Tuesday. Some scar tissue was found, removed, and sent off to pathology. Hopefully I won’t hear anything about it! Eventually I was sent home after keeping ginger ale and crackers down and of course proving that my plumbing was working properly.

I don’t recall much from the ride home, just the fact that my doctor thought Advil and Tylenol would work on my pain. Little side note…asking what your pain is like an hour after you wake up from anesthesia is not going to give you a true picture of pain. At the time I said I was at a 5. Which is right where you should be. HOWEVER, fast forward to their follow-up call at 11am the next morning…yeah my pain was at an 8! This is not good.

Another fun fact…when you can’t get the IV going the first time ask someone else to help!

Like OW!! (attempt 1)
Like OW!! (attempt 1)

Seriously I was about to punch the nurse in the face when she got “stuck” on attempt 2!

And who puts IV's in the crook of the elbow?? I mean really?!
And who puts IV’s in the crook of the elbow?? I mean really?!

Needless to say I now have some good drugs to help with recovery and the rest of the week off from work. Boo! I’m not happy about this, but it is what it is and I need to recover. So there we are.

Anyway…time home has been spent with snuggles from the cats, catching up on Bones (about time you two!), and a whole lot of sleep. Speaking of sleep I feel the pain creeping back in, which means the last round of meds are just about out of time. Seems time to set the laptop aside and ready for a nice nap!

Lasagna Soup {Gluten Free Recipe}

I’m still recovering from surgery…”good” times. More on that later. But first a recipe to kick off this rainy morning. I’ll be posting these gluten free recipes here and there on the blog to remind me of where they are and to help anyone out there looking for a gluten free alternative to eats.

This recipe comes from the lovely Daisy Chubb’s Tea and Treats blog! I’ve adapted it to fit my gluten free needs.

Ingredients

1 package Turkey Sausage (I use regular turkey sausage, but feel free to use regular sausage to any spice level you like)
1 green pepper (chopped)
4 cloves of garlic or more if you like (minced)
1 heaping tablespoon dried Basil
1 heaping tablespoon dried Oregano
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 large can diced tomatoes
6 cups chicken stock
1 package Pasta (I use Heartland gluten free Fusilli)
salt/pepper to taste

Cheese mixture

1 package Ricotta cheese
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese

Mix everything in the cheese mixture together and pop in the fridge until you’re ready to serve!

In a large soup pot cook Turkey Sausage until done. Add chopped green pepper to the pot with garlic, and dried herbs. Add tomato paste and stir to combine. Cook for 5-10 minutes until spices are fragrant and paste has started to caramelize.

Add full can of diced tomatoes and chicken broth. Also start to heat your pasta water now. Stir everything together and bring to a boil – once boiling, simmer over low heat for 30 minutes. Start cooking the gluten free pasta now in a separate pot…trust me.

Once everything is good and cooked….

Prepare your bowl with as much of the cheese mixture as you like in first and put the cooked pasta on top. Spoon the hot soup over top, add salt and pepper and let the cheese melt a bit. And enjoy!

No pictures of the finished product but this was the "soup" portion cooking away!

And DON’T Feed Them After Midnight!

You all know the movie…I know you do. But you might be wondering what the hell it has to do with this particular post. Well, I’ll tell you. Keep your pants on, please!

I’m having surgery tomorrow. Ok, so? I’m getting there… I have to be at the hospital at 11:00am. See it yet? The surgery is not until 12:30pm and I can’t eat a thing after midnight tonight or I’ll go from this….

So sweet and harmless. Right? (Source dailygrindhouse.com)

To this….

Holy sh!t! (Source famousmonsters.com)
Holy sh!t! (Source famousmonsters.com)

Oddly enough I think I’m more likely to turn into the above when tomorrow comes and I haven’t had a thing to eat since 10:00pm the night before. But hey what to I know? I much prefer 7:00am start times. Sigh.

The procedure you ask? Very minor and not quite ready to be shared. Mostly because I find it best not to tempt fate to kick me in the balls I don’t have. Sorry to be so frank, but I feel it is best to play this one cool in the hopes that what’s found is what they expect to find and that’s what I’m keeping my fingers crossed for.

In reality I will be so dopped up from the MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care) sleep I won’t have any idea what the hell is going on until I wake up. Which is FINE by me, thank you VERY much. Seriously when the anesthesiologist typically has shown up to recent surgeries my response has been “Are you hear with my cocktail?” This usually makes us both more comfortable…well, it makes me more comfortable. So that’s what matters right? You bed.

Now that we’ve come to the point where I’ve started to ramble…it must mean it’s time for me to raid the fridge. I’ve got an hour and 40 minutes to go! So wish me luck and I will try to post while I’m home resting up the next few days. Even if it’s only to tell you all I’m still alive.

Van Winkle, Rip Van Winkle

The rest of my adventure in Marblehead, MA will continue I promise. In fact I was going to post about it last night, but instead I opted to take a short nap. But instead my body was like “nope, you are going to sleep from 5:30 to 11:30pm! So I thought, well I guess I needed the sleep.

WRONG! I was up maybe an hour (had dinner, chatted with the husband, etc), then went right back to bed! Weird right? Right. So that’s what my night/morning was like. In fact I could easily go back to bed RIGHT now. So I guess I should brew a pot of strong tea or coffee to fight the need to sleep.

Stay tuned. While you do that don’t forget to enter the giveaway. All you need to do is comment on that post and tell me what you’d like to win…so hop to it!

Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs… {Part 1}

Yes, the title of this here set of posts happens to be from one of my favorite movies…Die Hard. If you haven’t seen it, you should.

Let’s back track a little. Way back in September at a work conference KatyDid* and I got to hang out. Usually we only saw one another on video meeting chats for work. So it was great to meet her in person. She’s a really lovely person and we hit it off right away. While at the conference one of us mentioned we should have a girls weekend. No talk of work, or anything remotely sounding like work. Sure we both thought it sounded great. But as usual life totally got in the way.

Until a few weeks ago. Ok Maybe March. We got to chatting on Twitter and again mentioned the girls weekend idea. The next thing you know a date was set and I had train tickets! I would be off to Marblehead, MA on Memorial Day weekend. It would be awesome. But, as with any form of travel, there were a few bumps along the way.

First off there were the women on my train to NYC who apparently thought they were sitting a train car apart. In reality they were right next to and across from one another. I just wanted to sleep! Then there was the usual close to two hour layover in NYC. I don’t really mind it…LOTS of people watching to be had there. Then of course there was my little spectacle. Word to the wise don’t sit on your luggage unless you happen to be straddling it. Why? Well, yo might end up FLAT ON YOUR ASS like I did. With all of Penn station turning to look at you. Not my proudest moment, but memorable.

This was post ass falling.
This was post ass falling.

Then of course there was the joy of the horde rush when the track was announced. Take it easy people the train isn’t going to get there any faster if you get on it first! Instead you are probably just going to annoy me and others around you who actually tried to form some kind of line to board. True story.

I settled in for the long trip out to Boston.
I settled in for the long trip out to Boston.

I somehow managed to snag the last window seat in my car. Five minutes later and I would hav been stuck on the aisle…not my most favorite place on the train. The trip out was pretty smooth and somewhat quiet. I had a seat mate who worked the whole way from NYC to Boston. I felt bad as I nodded off at one point and hoped like hell I didn’t snore. If I did she didn’t say a word about it. Thank you nice lady.

Said nice lady even offered to help me navigate the MTA. Which I found super comforting as nothing tends to give me more anxiety than trying to navigate a new transit system. But it turned out she had to work a little more in the station, but she pointed me in the somewhat right direction. Meaning she told me to take a left when I should have taken a right. No harm done there. Because I happened to get on the next train which got me to the second train in record time. Hell I even caught the earlier commuter train. I don’t know how, but somehow I did and my anxiety passed as I knew I was almost there.

I arrived at the train station my phone chose to call Swamp Scotch…it happens to be called Swampcott. Oddly enough KatyDid found my autocorrect to be awesome as Swampscott is the rival of Marblehead…at least in terms of high school sports. One point to you phone. So there I was and there was no KatyDid, she didn’t forget me, in fact she was only five minutes away. In no time she pulled in to the station and we were off on a weekend of fun!

First stop was home to drop my gear and use the much needed restroom! Plus I also was able to meet Leo who was awesome enough to let me crash with him and his mom.

He's a sweet little ball of fur.
He’s a sweet little ball of fur.

At first he wasn’t sure what to make of me. But then he must have caught the cat servitude vibe from me and we were fast friends. Once I was settled in we were off for some of the best damn chowdah I’ve ever had. Not to mention the tasty virgin bloody mary too! After dinner I got a mini tour of Marblehead and a stop off a a pretty sweet specialty type market. I even made my first purchase!

Photo thanks to KatyDid!

After that it was back home to relax, have a little wine, and laugh until my face hurt. And that friend was just my first half day in Marblehead! Stay tuned for parts 2-4!

*I never use peoples full names, you know that.

No, not dead…complete with sickness, cats, and stuff

Yes I’m alive. It has not been a good week for my health. I stayed home last Friday figuring I would totally feel better come Monday. I even took ALL the  over the counter cold meds. But NO it was worse come Monday. How worse? Well, I had to head off to the land of urgent care. Where when you arrive when they open at 5pm…you don’t actually get seen until an hour later. Total bullshit right there kids. (I’m sorry, but it happens to be true.)

But the doc there was nice enough to give me the magic of cold meds with codeine! Plus other assorted meds. AND a note to stay home from work! I actually didn’t know they did that these days. So I took it and I slept. But come Wednesday I was still not feeling amazing. So I stayed home yet another day. Being home is NOT all you might think it is when you are over the age of 17. I was bored! Sure I slept a lot.

This guy kept me ALL the company!
This guy kept me ALL the company!

Seriously it was like having a dog! Which was awesome because he didn’t need to go for a walk! So Ty and I hung out a lot while I was home. It was pretty awesome of him. I then tried to make my return to work on Thursday…that lasted to 11:30am. I took the bus home (story for another time), ate, and promptly passed out.

But today I made it the WHOLE day. Yay me! And now, now my stomach has opted to revolt against me…on pizza night of all nights! This is seriously not cool. Looks like I’ll be having pasta tonight…booo.

But that’s what’s been doing in my neck of the woods this week. Glamorous I know. But I promise regular posts will pick back up. In good time.
